At its best, Home Circuit seamlessly blends the idea of racing an RC car with a video game and does it while making the act of creation playful. I may not be able to play Home Circuit with my friends — but at least my cat software downloads freeware can join in when she feels like making trouble. It felt immersive enough that I couldn’t help but laugh after I noticed I was driving on the right side of the road during a test run despite the lack of incoming traffic. There’s definitely a certain sense of freedom that comes with driving on a road without traffic, especially in California. It features a lot of content from bikes to tracks and lots of different events to take part in. But when it comes down to actually being fun to play, it just misses that mark. Unlike other motor racing games on the market whether it be simulation or arcade, its controls are too stiff and extremely punishing. Whilst impressive with its visuals and sound, Ride 4 is let down somewhat by its lack of accessibility which can be a problem in the current day and age of video games.

You’re also not getting a game you can easily play with friends. But in their stead, you get a racing game that’s really unlike anything else out there.

You can adjust the realism by going the self-supporting route and fully controlling just about every aspect of the race, not just the way your car controls but also your pit stops. You can also make the game even more challenging by turning on things like actual damage, mechanical failure, tire wear, fuel usage and penalties.

Or you could go the easier route by turning on every assist you can muster. As a gaming egalitarian, I’m always a proponent of accessibility in games for folks of varying skill levels. The track selection, meanwhile, include the usual racing game suspects such as Daytona, Long Beach and Hockenheim. The complement of tracks also include some that were either laser- or drone-scanned for added realism. My personal favorite is California Highway 1, which I consider one of the most beautiful driving experiences you can have in real life.
